– personalization of our development as doctors and future healthcare professionals. Attending HEART, you have the chance to learn from speakers that answer students’ needs. We, the students that posed the issues, are well aware that medical education comprises a variety of directions, as many as one considers to be necessary, from IT to art, from leadership to medical research and many others.
This interdisciplinary conference is already at its 5th edition, consisting not only of lectures, but also trainings, workshops and round-table discussions. Furthermore, we are already growing as a community of enthusiastic students that share ideas and work together, by creating smaller events that are to be taking place all year-round.
We are a team composed of enthusiastic medical students that aim to bring people together every year with different educational events, the main one being the HEART conference. Our goal is to offer them a different perspective and help them grow not only professionally but also as a person. With over 100 volunteers at the present time, we started in 2014 and since then we continued sharing the progress of medical education and the people who passionately make it happen everyday.
The HEART community works together in order to provide inspiration and innovative ideas that guide medical students in their future career choices. The conference brings together many prestigious speakers who come from different countries and work not only in medicine, but also in other fields. Their speeches focus on self growth and promote useful values that manage to significantly broaden the horizons of their listeners. Also, during the year, we organize several HEART evenings where we invite someone that inspires us and start an open conversation around an interesting and complex topic. The purpose of these evenings is to create in informal environment that promotes a free flow of ideas between the speaker and the participants.
Also, in an attempt to bring together relatively different disciplines, we aim to organize the very first transylvanian medical hackathon called Medhack. This is a competition where students will use their diverse knowledge in order to solve issues that are found constantly in the medical system. The main goal is to encourage people from different professional backgrounds to find solutions for what could be done better in medicine.
Last but not least, we acknowledge the great importance of music in our lives and its positive influence. This is why we support MedStrings, an orchestra composed by students, resident physicians and physicians, who express their passion for music every time they play their instruments.
Thought refers to ideas or arrangements of ideas that are the result of the process of thinking. Even though thinking is an activity considered essential to humanity, there is no consensus as to how it is defined or understood. Our thoughts have the strongest influence on our actions. By changing our thoughts, we are also changing our perspective, therefore we reach the point of changing the way we act too. We should try think in a positive way if we really want to do something that can change the world. Once you are an optimistic, the world can be yours.
The 2014 editon brought us speakers who changed our perspectives and broadened our horizons. Our aim was to do something that can influence our ideas and prepare for a new approach. Every speaker tried their best to make us change the old perspective into a new one regarding ways of thinking.
One of the speakers, Ihsan Solaroglu, said that “Some things are meant to be learned from people, not books” who tried to suggest that books cannot save us in every situation, but people can. Another important speaker transmitted us that we have to be able to see the world around us and the way they influence us “It’s up to us whether to light and link the stars in our universe or just float around into the void” Ioan Stefan Florian.
Collaboration in health care is defined as health care professionals assuming complementary roles and cooperatively working together, sharing responsibility for problem-solving and making decisions to formulate and carry out plans for patient care. With the purpose of obtaining the best results, we must act as efficiently as we can. Sometimes we think that if we work individually we can solve a problem faster, but this make us slower. With each day that passes we come to realize that acting alone is no longer effective and that in order to truly have an impact on the quality of life around us, we must act together.
In 2015, not only did we try to organize a conference where people could be inspired by speakers from all over the world, but we wanted more – a new experience, a new perspective for everyone. So, with the help of Teodora Mocan who tried to encourage us to follow ideas that make us be different “You should research what makes you excited, what makes you feel inspired!”, we achieved our purpose. Another inspiring mentor and promoter of innovation, George Adrian Călin, said that “In science you have to go away from the highway, from the beaten path”.
So, the big idea is that we can do something new. Ever since we were little children, we’ve been dreaming of growing up and changing the world. For us, having the desire to change the world is extremely well presented in the work we do, but we have to learn to work together and communicate .
When we think about life and the world around us, we perceive it as a big network that contains so many connections between people, situations and events. But since not every system is perfect, there are networks that contains gaps and this where, we, the millennials interfere using our knowledge. We are purpose-driven and idealistically try to change the world for the better while bridging the gap not only between health and disease, but also between progress and stagnation in the medical field. We are those who cannot sleep because we have the craziest ideas that one day can contribute in making a paramount improvement in Medicine and its ability of making one’s life better.
In 2016, with the help of one of our notable speakers, Nigel Davis, who studied Physics at Oxford and integrated it into medicine, we realized that we are never curious enough and there should always be a place for the question “why?”. Also, we were taught about how important research is and how we could get a Grant by inspiring mentors such as Dr. Horia Stefanescu and Prof.Dr. Daniela Ionescu. Moreover, since learning is so important, sometimes we get stuck in the process of it, not doing it properly. But with the help of teachers like Dr. Sebastian Armean we got an idea about the mistakes we sometimes make on this beautiful path of learning and studying as medical students.
When we think about education, we often perceive it as a light that drives away the darkness making it possible to observe what is around you, similar to an awakening. And that is indeed the meaning of educating yourself; expanding your mind in order to be able to perceive the world around you deeper and using this advantage by creating new opportunities to make it a better place. Millennials like challenges, and since working on yourself in order to become a better, more educated individual is often a path with many ups and downs, they succeed in it and direct their energy and thoughts in building new ideas.
In 2017, we had speakers who showed us that we need to see beyond the educational system and educate ourselves because sometimes we are the only ones who can save ourselves. A good example of this is our notable speaker, Tal Golesworthy who managed to repair his own heart by creating a device for his aortic dilation. Isn’t it a wonderful example of a person who refused to believe that there are limits in this world and he used his ideas in order to save himself. Moreover, one of the many inspiring people we had, Dr. Dana Ionescu told us more about interventional neuroradiology and left us amazed by the mysteries around the “tiny” machine that shapes who we are- the brain.
In the 5th edition of the HEART Conference, we emphasize the importance of the young generation’s initiative in creating a brighter path in healthcare. We are the Millennials who are on call to change the world for the better. We’re passionate and purpose driven. We value collaboration over competition.
We’ve taken our education into our own hands, and we want to inspire others to do the same. This is the reason behind our relentless effort to create a community where people work together, innovate and evolve.
We want to be the director of our own film, not just an actor in someone else’s. Thus, we invite you to join us in our journey and help us create an unforgettable movie!
